Expressions of interest are now open for the 2027 ILCA Oceania Youth Solidarity Programme, an initiative aimed at growing participation in the ILCA 4 class and helping young female sailors bridge the gap between junior fleets and youth performance sailing.
Now in its fifth year, the programme connects New Zealand, Australia, and several Pacific Island nations under a shared development framework. At its heart is a drive to promote the ILCA 4 to junior sailors weighing up a move into the class, while also boosting attendance at the Oceania and Australian Open and Youth ILCA Championships.
Each participating ILCA district nominates one female sailor, aged between 13 and 16, to compete at the 2027 championships, scheduled for 1 to 8 January at Sandringham Yacht Club in Melbourne. Selected athletes receive full event entry, a race-ready ILCA 4 charter boat, dedicated squad coaching throughout the regatta, and official programme merchandise.
Development, not results, is the clear priority. Selectors will consider a nominee's regatta experience, their potential for ongoing improvement, and the likelihood they will continue progressing within the class. Access considerations also form part of the assessment, acknowledging that some sailors may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend an event of this scale.
Yachting New Zealand is actively encouraging applications from eligible sailors, with a particular focus on Starling sailors and other junior-class athletes considering a step up into ILCA sailing. To help those selected arrive well prepared, the organisation will provide a targeted pre-event domestic coaching package of up to four sessions delivered by leading New Zealand sailors, with the aim of sharpening preparation and building confidence ahead of the regatta.
Applicants must be aged 13 to 16 as of 1 January 2027.
Applications close on 1 August 2026. Selections will be made during August, with successful sailors confirmed by 30 August.
