Best pillow materials for boat cabins and how to keep them mould free

A good night's sleep afloat depends on far more than simply having a comfortable berth. What you rest your head on matters enormously, and in the confined, moisture-laden environment of a boat cabin, the wrong pillow can quickly become a breeding ground for mould, mildew, and a damp smell that clings stubbornly no matter what you do. Marine cabins accumulate moisture with startling ease, which means the materials you choose deserve considerably more thought than most sailors give them.

Knowing your options is a good place to start.

Latex, memory foam, and down are the pillow types most people are already familiar with, but familiarity does not mean suitability for life afloat. Among these, shredded latex is one of the standout performers in a marine context. It is antimicrobial and breathable, far less inclined than conventional memory foam to trap heat and bacteria, and it offers natural resistance to both mould and mildew. High-density shredded latex also holds its shape reliably over time rather than gradually flattening to nothing. Caring for it calls for a gentle approach: spot clean the casing with a cloth dampened in lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent. If mustiness develops, submerge the inner casing in lukewarm soapy water and squeeze the water gently through the material without scrubbing or agitating it, since vigorous treatment breaks the latex fragments into fine dust. Press the pillow firmly between two large towels to extract most of the moisture, then lay it flat on a drying rack somewhere breezy, shaking and fluffing it regularly to prevent the pieces from clumping. Keep it well away from dryers and direct sunlight. A thoroughly soaked shredded latex pillow can take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to dry completely, and putting the cover back on before the core is fully dry is a reliable invitation to mould.

Dry-fast foam is another strong contender for the marine berth. Its open-cell, highly porous structure means water passes straight through rather than accumulating inside, making it particularly well suited to humid cabins where condensation is a daily fact of life. It is also the simplest pillow type to clean: a rinse with fresh water is generally all that is needed. Stains or odours respond well to a mild soap solution squeezed gently through the material and rinsed out thoroughly. Rather than laying it flat to dry, stand it on its edge. Unlike most foam types, dry-fast foam tolerates direct sunlight without degrading, and that exposure usefully kills surface bacteria and mould spores in the process.

Wool pillows bring genuine moisture-wicking performance to the berth alongside everyday comfort. Naturally antibacterial and largely self-cleaning, they do not require frequent washing. Washing too often can reduce the wool's performance over time, so airing the pillow in a dry, breezy spot every few weeks is usually all it needs to stay fresh. For spot cleaning, dab any stains carefully with a wool-safe detergent and lukewarm water, taking care not to rub or scrub, as doing so causes the fibres to felt and mat. When a full wash is unavoidable, hand wash in cool water with a wool-safe detergent and dry it flat in a well-ventilated space, turning it regularly to prevent the fill from clumping.

Sailors who sleep hot may find buckwheat hull pillows worth a closer look. Filled with the byproduct of milling buckwheat flour, they are cool, breathable, durable, non-toxic, and hypoallergenic, and some sailors claim they even help reduce ambient noise, hull slap included. The trade-off is firmness, so choose with that in mind. Cleaning them requires particular care, because the hulls themselves cannot get wet. The process involves unzipping the casing, transferring the hulls to a large bowl or bag, and machine washing the empty casing on a hot cycle. While the casing is being washed, spread the hulls on a tray in direct sunlight for an hour or two to deodorise them and drive off any trapped moisture. Before refilling, shake the hulls through a coarse sieve to clear out the fine dust that builds up over time. If the hulls are ever thoroughly soaked from a spill, they will generally need to be replaced, since saturation destroys their structural integrity. Replacement hulls are available in bulk online.

Getting the pillow right is only part of the task. In a marine environment, the pillowcase and cover materials you choose matter just as much.

Tencel, also known as Lyocell, is frequently recommended as the ideal choice for boat bedding. More absorbent than cotton and softer than silk, it draws moisture away as vapour before condensation has a chance to form, keeping you dry even when the cabin air is thick with humidity. Wash it in cold or lukewarm water on a gentle cycle, leaving bleach and fabric softeners out of the equation entirely. Softeners coat the fibres and progressively reduce their moisture-wicking ability, so air drying is preferable to machine drying in any case. If the pillowcase picks up salt, rinse it promptly in fresh water, since salt crystals are abrasive enough to damage Tencel's smooth surface over time. Mildew spots respond well to a 30-minute soak in a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, followed by a normal wash.

Linen is another excellent choice. Its hollow fibres allow free airflow through the fabric, it can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch, and it dries around 40% faster than cotton. It is also the most durable of the pillowcase options here, growing stronger and softer with repeated washing rather than wearing out. It handles warm water washing without complaint, meaning it can go through the machine and be back on the berth the same day. For mildew or mustiness, half a cup of baking soda added to the wash cycle works well, as does a splash of white vinegar in the rinse. White or natural linen can be dried in direct sunlight on deck, where UV exposure gently bleaches out any yellowing.

Bamboo viscose deserves consideration for warmer or tropical sailing. Its micro-structure wicks moisture faster than standard cotton, and its natural temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic properties make it well suited to sticky, humid conditions. It does need careful handling: always use cold water and a gentle cycle, turning the pillowcase inside out before it goes in. Use a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent, and avoid bleach and fabric softeners entirely, as these clog the fabric's pores and undermine its breathability. Air dry in the shade rather than direct sunlight, since prolonged UV exposure will eventually make the viscose fibres brittle.

For those who prefer cotton, a percale weave is a significantly better choice than sateen below deck. The crisp, open structure of percale creates small air pockets that encourage ventilation, whereas sateen's denser weave traps heat and can feel oppressive in a stuffy cabin.

Some materials are best avoided altogether. Organic cotton is prone to mould and mildew in persistently damp conditions. Microfibre and polyester blends tend to feel clammy and warm, trap body heat, and take far longer to dry out properly. Sateen shares these shortcomings, making it a poor fit for the marine environment.

Even with the right pillow and pillowcase in place, a layered approach to protection is worth the effort. A breathable, zippered waterproof pillow protector placed underneath the pillowcase shields against saltwater spray and sweat while stopping mould and allergens from working their way into the pillow itself. Whatever protective covers you choose, ensure any zippers are plastic or nylon rather than metal, since metal corrodes quickly in a salt air environment.

The best sleeping setup on a boat addresses breathability, moisture resistance, and durability at every layer. A shredded latex or dry-fast foam pillow, paired with a Tencel, linen, or bamboo pillowcase and backed by a zippered waterproof protector underneath, gives you a solid foundation. Look after each layer properly, and mould and mildew become something manageable rather than inevitable, season after season.
