Spirit 2 electric outboard wins Alternative Propulsion award at Miami Boat Show

The Spirit 2 electric outboard has taken out the Innovation Award for Alternative Propulsion at the Miami International Boat Show, one of the marine industry's most prominent annual events.

Judges singled out the Spirit 2 for its engineering and practical contribution to electric propulsion on the water. Judge Kelsey Bailey described it as "a significant improvement from earlier iterations of small electric outboards, with enough power and battery capacity to propel a small sailboat or large dinghy without range paranoia," adding that "the robust, field serviceable battery connection is a highlight for off grid adventurers."

The award marks ten years of ePropulsion developing electric propulsion for the marine sector, and comes as regulatory pressure and demand for cleaner, quieter alternatives continue to grow.

Powering the Spirit 2 is a 2 kW motor with a 3 kW Boost Mode available on the tiller version. Boost Mode can run for up to one minute with a minimum battery state of charge of 20% and within safe temperature limits. The motor weighs between 10.2 kg and 10.7 kg depending on shaft length, and pairs with a 1539 Wh quick-connect battery weighing 10.4 kg, which ePropulsion says is the largest in its class.

Practical features include a detachable clamp, foldable tiller, shallow water trimming, 90-degree tilt, integrated steering lock, and a safety kill switch. Hydrogeneration allows the system to generate electricity while sailing between 3 and 16 knots, producing up to 380 W at 10 knots. A 45 W USB-C output handles device charging, and an optional inverter accessory converts the battery into a portable power station.

The Spirit 2 is compatible with ePropulsion's 48 V platform and E Series batteries, and supports solar charging and integration with third-party energy systems including Victron Energy.
