Starlink Ocean Mode

PredictWind adds data controls to stop Starlink allowance drain offshore

PredictWind has released new data management modes for its DataHub and DataHub Pro devices, giving boaters direct control over which apps can access Starlink connections at sea.

The update follows recent changes to Starlink's data terms, which have sharpened focus on data management for offshore sailors.

The two new modes address a growing problem: background processes on phones, tablets and laptops consuming data allowances before essential weather and safety tools get a look in.

PredictWind Mode blocks non-essential apps and background updates while maintaining connectivity for forecasts and critical safety applications. Total Data Usage displays consumption across the entire vessel network and by individual device, allowing owners to identify heavy users before receiving a bill.

The modes run on DataHub, PredictWind's onboard connectivity hub that links a boat's network to the company's forecasting and safety services. DataHub Pro, released in August, adds Wi-Fi 6, LTE connectivity and automatic failover between connections, and supports apps including Over the Horizon AIS, Anchor Alert and Man Overboard.

"A phone backing up photos or a laptop running updates can burn through an allowance before you've even checked the latest weather forecast or route," said PredictWind founder Jon Bilger.

"When you're offshore, your data is part of your safety margin," Bilger added. "You want it going to your forecasts and safety tools, not some app you forgot was running in the background."

The data control modes are available now for DataHub and DataHub Pro owners using Starlink.
