Jacqueline Kennedy delivered New Zealand's standout result at the 2026 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax, Canada, claiming gold in the Junior Women's K1 500m final on Sunday 5 July (NZT).
Kennedy had shown her form from day one, winning her heat outright to advance directly to the A Final. She made good on that when it counted, crossing the line first in a field drawn from 54 countries.
It was the highlight of a busy week for the New Zealand contingent, which mixed seasoned international racers with athletes competing at their first World Championships.
The Junior Women's K4 crew of Stella Crossan, Kennedy, Alexis Toy, and Taylor Newman went straight through to the A Final from day one and finished fourth. Crossan and Toy also reached the A Final in the Junior Women's K2 500m, placing seventh. Newman made the A Final in the K1 200m and finished ninth.
In the junior men's events, Lachlan Harkness and Oliver Hutchinson won their B Final in the K2 500m. Harkness also raced the K1 1000m, finishing seventh in the B Final.
The U23 squad worked through a full programme across the week. Natasha MacGibbon progressed from her heat to the semifinal in the K1 1000m and finished eighth in the A Final. Thomas MacGibbon reached the A Final in the U23 Men's K1 200m and placed seventh. The U23 Men's K4 of Dylan Monk, Tiago Chamberlain, Sam Lees, and Reid Clancy also made the A Final, finishing ninth.
Madison Garrett raced in both the K1 500m and the K2 500m. Paired with Olive Pearce in the K2, they finished third in their semifinal to reach the A Final, where they placed eighth. The mixed relay pairs, Oliver Hutchinson with Alexis Toy and Reid Clancy with Olive Pearce, both finished 12th in their respective 5km relay finals.
Kennedy's gold was the result of the week, and the performances across the squad pointed to genuine depth in New Zealand's junior and U23 canoe sprint ranks.
