Blackstone buys Hamilton Island from Oatley family in late 2025 deal

2 min read

Hamilton Island, the Whitsundays destination that has shaped Australian sailing culture for decades, is set to change hands after Blackstone confirmed an acquisition agreement at the end of December 2025.

Few venues on the Australian sailing calendar carry the weight of Hamilton Island. Internationally recognised events including Hamilton Island Race Week have drawn offshore racers, cruising yachts, and superyachts to its deep-water courses year after year. Reliable trade winds, a fully serviced marina, and its position within the Whitsundays have combined to make it one of the country's most significant regatta and boating hubs.

Blackstone confirmed that real estate funds managed by the global investment firm had entered into an agreement to acquire Hamilton Island from the Oatley family. At the time of the announcement, the transaction remained subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The scale of what is changing hands is considerable. Hamilton Island sits within the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef and spans more than 2,800 acres across two islands, with roughly 70 percent of that land remaining undeveloped. The destination encompasses five hotels, more than 20 restaurants and bars, 20 retail outlets, a championship 18-hole golf course on nearby Dent Island, a full-service marina, and a commercial airport. Beyond tourism, Hamilton Island is a significant regional employer, underpinning a substantial on-island community and a broad network of Whitsundays suppliers and partners.

Chris Heady, Chairman of Asia Pacific and Head of Real Estate Asia at Blackstone, framed the acquisition as consistent with the firm's broader focus on long-term hospitality and leisure investment across the Asia Pacific region.

"Hamilton Island is an exceptional destination, and we are honoured to build on the vision and dedication the Oatley family has brought to its transformation," Heady said. "We are committed to supporting the island's long term success, its people, and its local community."

The Oatley family welcomed the agreement. Under their stewardship, Hamilton Island underwent extensive redevelopment while retaining its standing as Australia's leading tropical sailing and resort destination, a reputation built carefully over many years.

For Blackstone, the purchase adds to an Australian portfolio that already includes major hospitality investments such as Crown Resorts, along with significant infrastructure assets across the region. Bringing Hamilton Island into that portfolio adds to Blackstone's presence in premium leisure destinations, while the island itself continues its role at the heart of Australian boating and regatta heritage.
