For Sam Allen, one of the co-founders of NZ Boat Register, the story behind the AquaGPS device is deeply personal. His own parents were lost at sea, and it was only by chance that they were found and rescued after radio communications failed.
Two years in the making, the AquaGPS device was built with exactly the kind of scenario in mind that nearly cost Allen's family so dearly. The unit provides coverage of up to 85 nautical miles offshore, recording a vessel's position every two minutes and giving rescuers a fighting chance when radio transmission stops working.
