As the start gun went off, the British team shot out of the gate, gaining an early lead, but it didn’t take long for Emirates Team New Zealand to seize control. The lead flipped multiple times throughout the first leg, keeping everyone on edge. Halfway through the leg, the Kiwis found their stride, surging ahead by 150 metres, powering towards Gate 1. New Zealand crossed the gate at 4 minutes and 54 seconds, their boat slicing through the water at 35 knots, while INEOS Britannia followed 19 seconds later. Despite the British team’s early lead, the Kiwis were relentless, quickly extending their advantage to 250 metres.

As they battled through leg 2, the low winds proved challenging for the Brits, who struggled to maintain foiling. New Zealand, on the other hand, showed no signs of trouble, increasing their lead to 300 metres. By the time they reached Gate 2 at 9:09, it was clear they had the upper hand. The British team, 22 seconds behind, could only watch as their rivals extended their lead. Leg 3 brought a sudden twist, with Emirates Team New Zealand momentarily dipping off their foils. This gave INEOS Britannia a golden opportunity, closing the gap to just 40 metres. The race had become a nail-biter as both boats approached Gate 3 neck and neck.

But the Kiwis weren't about to let the Cup slip from their grasp. They forced INEOS into their dirty wind, slowing them down just enough to regain a solid 150-metre lead as they headed into leg 4.

A Nail-Biting Finish

By the time they rounded Gate 4 at 18 minutes and 27 seconds, New Zealand was holding off the Brits with just a 150-metre buffer. As leg 5 began, it was anyone’s race, with INEOS Britannia only 70 metres behind, closing the gap inch by inch. However, as they approached the final gate, Emirates Team New Zealand made their move. Passing through Gate 5 at 23 minutes and 30 seconds, they cemented their lead, with the British team trailing by 17 seconds. The Kiwis held their nerve in the final stretch, racing towards the finish line to seal the victory.
