The island of Marstrand is set for a high-stakes championship day at the 2026 GKSS Match Cup Sweden and Nordea Women's Trophy, with Australian Cole Tapper among those to fall at the quarterfinal stage as the field narrowed to four in both the Open and Women's competitions.
Tapper and Kairos Racing went down 3-2 to local favourite Johnie Berntsson in a gripping five-race battle, before Berntsson was himself eliminated in the semifinals by compatriot and round robin leader Oscar Engström. Engström topped the qualifying stage with a 6-3 record to earn a direct berth to the semis, then produced one of his strongest performances of the week in that 2-0 win. He now meets American Chris Poole and Riptide Racing in the Open Match Cup final.
Poole, the 2024 Match Cup Sweden champion chasing his second title in three years, had his own tests to pass. He came from behind to beat defending champion Jeppe Borch of Denmark 3-2 in the quarterfinals, then defeated France's Ange Delerce 2-1 in a hard-fought semifinal.
Delerce was the story of the day. Competing in his first World Match Racing Tour championship event, the French skipper qualified fifth from the round robin before knocking out seven-time Match Cup Sweden champion Björn Hansen and the Hansen Sailing Team 3-1, the biggest shock of the regatta. Conditions throughout were demanding, with fresh north-westerly winds gusting above 20 knots. He fell one win short of the final, but his Marstrand debut has firmly established him as one of the tour's brightest emerging talents.
In the Nordea Women's Trophy, Sweden's Martina Carlsson and Beyond Racing have been the dominant force all week. Their 2-0 semifinal win over Denmark's Lea Richter Vogelius extended their unbeaten run to nine consecutive race wins. Carlsson now faces defending champion and reigning women's match racing world champion Pauline Courtois of France in the final.
Courtois kept her title defence on track with a 2-0 win over former champion Anna Östling, preventing an all-Swedish final. Earlier in the day, Östling had beaten American newcomers Caroline Bayless and Team Something Chill 3-1, Courtois swept compatriot Julia D'Amodio and Shark Caviar Racing 3-0, and Richter Vogelius booked her semifinal berth with a 3-1 win over the Netherlands' Julia Aartsen and Team Out of the Box.
Championship Saturday at the GKSS Match Cup Sweden, an official World Match Racing Tour stage hosted by the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club, now comes down to two compelling finals. Engström carries the hopes of the home crowd against Poole, while Carlsson's flawless campaign faces its sternest examination against the defending champion.
