Auckland's offshore passage racing scene has a solid programme locked in for 2026/27, with confirmed dates for the Doyle Sails Gold Cup Series and two new developments bringing fresh interest to the competition.
Four Auckland clubs share the organisation of the Gold Cup. Royal Akarana Yacht Club leads the series, with the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, Richmond Yacht Club, and Bucklands Beach Yacht Club alongside. Together they run five races that sweep across the Hauraki Gulf and beyond, covering more than 300 nautical miles of competitive sailing. The opening four, the Spring Regatta, Roy McDell Trophy, Bean Rock Trophy, and Percy Jones Memorial, range between 35 and 48 nautical miles each. Calibrated to build pressure through the season, they rarely produce a settled series before the final race.
That final race is the Balokovic Cup, an 89-nautical-mile overnight passage with a reputation for turning the standings on their head at the last possible moment. Last season was a textbook example. Nigel Hendy and the crew of Nirvana arrived at the Balokovic start holding a single-point advantage on PHRF handicap and protected it through the night to claim the overall series title. On Line Honours, Equilibrium held the lead ahead of Alegre, who was not racing, securing that series win as well. Both Gold Cup titles were decided on the same February night.
The Balokovic Cup reaches its 90th running this coming season. The race dates to 1931 and, while the war years created a gap in its history, it has run without interruption within living memory. For anyone who has competed in the event, that anniversary lends the start line a particular weight.

A dedicated shorthanded division is new to the series this season, bringing its own scoring and prize structure across all five races. Two-handed offshore sailing has grown steadily in New Zealand, and the Gold Cup has long attracted crews prepared to race genuine passage distances with minimal numbers on board. The format suits short-handed crews well: four coastal races followed by an overnight passage that gives a two-person crew a proper test of their ability, without demanding the commitment of a major offshore campaign.
The full trophy list reflects the breadth of the competition. The Rothmans Gold Cup goes to the overall PHRF monohull winner, the Rothmans Silver Cup to the overall Line monohull winner, the Nesbitt Trophy to the shorthanded series winner, and the Ivan Whale Trophy to the multihull handicap winner. Each of the five individual races carries its own trophy as well.
