Sweden's home fleet delivered exactly what local fans were hoping for at Marstrand, with Oscar Engström and Martina Carlsson both securing automatic semifinal berths after dominating their respective round robins at the 2026 GKSS Match Cup Sweden.
Carlsson was the standout performer across either fleet. Her Beyond Racing crew went through the women's round robin undefeated, winning all seven matches to become the only skipper in either division without a loss. That perfect record sends her directly into the last four as one of the favourites for the Nordea Women's Trophy.
In the Open division, Engström led the way with a 6-3 record to earn direct passage to the semifinals. Four-time Match Cup Sweden champion Björn Hansen matched that record but must come through the quarterfinals, as must local favourite Johnie Berntsson, who finished 5-4.
French newcomer Ange Delerce had a strong debut, also posting 5-4 to qualify comfortably in fourth. His compatriots Ian Garreta and Aurélien Pierroz were eliminated in ninth and tenth respectively, alongside Swiss veteran Eric Monnin and his Swiss Match Racing Team in eighth.
Former champions Chris Poole of the United States and Denmark's Jeppe Borch, winners of the 2024 and 2025 editions respectively, both endured difficult opening rounds but survived to contest the quarterfinals. Neither can afford another stumble.
In the women's draw, Sweden's Anna Östling and WINGS Sailing finished second with a 6-1 record and now face Caroline Bayless and Team Something Chill from the United States. Bayless is making her Marstrand debut, and Östling's familiarity with the venue may count for plenty.
Defending Nordea Women's Trophy champion Pauline Courtois of France and her Match in Pink team will meet compatriot Julia D'Amodio and Shark Caviar Racing in an all-French quarterfinal, while the Netherlands' Julia Aartsen and Team Out of the Box take on Denmark's Lea Vogelius and WOW Racing.
Unsettled weather and stronger winds are forecast over the coming days, which will test boat handling across the FarEast 28 fleet as the competition moves into its knockout phase.
