Canoe Racing New Zealand is strengthening its national selection structure, with the organisation seeking an additional selector to cover both Open and Age Group competition. The move reflects genuine confidence in the sport's depth and ambition, and a clear commitment to bringing greater rigour to decision-making across every tier.
The role has been created to support evidence-based selection panels, and CRNZ is deliberately looking beyond the canoe sprint community in its search. Candidates with high-performance backgrounds in other elite sporting environments are specifically encouraged to put their names forward. The organisation has made clear that finding the right person matters more than satisfying any particular checklist of formal credentials.
Personal qualities carry as much weight as technical knowledge in this appointment. CRNZ wants someone who can function confidently within a panel setting, hold their position when discussions become difficult, and handle sensitive information with discretion. The capacity to work constructively alongside fellow selectors and CRNZ staff is central to what the role demands, as is the ability to contribute meaningfully when views among panellists diverge.
During the competitive season, the successful candidate will be involved at the points where selection decisions take shape. Responsibilities cover reviewing athlete performance data, attending formal selection meetings, and working through alignment discussions with the wider panel and relevant staff members.
