Few small bluewater sailboats inspire the lasting loyalty that the Bristol Channel Cutter has earned since Lyle Hess drew the design in the early 1970s. Makaira is a 1980 build from that lineage, currently listed for sale in Auckland at $31,000.
She commands attention at the dock. A deep, glossy dark blue hull, traditional brightwork and wooden trim, and the bowsprit and boomkin that push her overall length to nearly 38 feet give Makaira the unmistakable bearing of a yacht that has been somewhere and could go again. Dock-walkers stop.
The BCC28's reputation among bluewater sailors is grounded in sound practical decisions. The cutter rig, working across the full spread made possible by the bowsprit and boomkin, opens up a wide range of sail configurations that becomes genuinely valuable when offshore conditions deteriorate. The full keel delivers directional stability and a steady tracking motion well suited to wind vane self-steering, making the boat as capable shorthanded or singlehanded as she is comfortable on a long watch. Wide side decks and considered proportions reflect a designer who understood what ocean sailing actually demands.
Makaira's own history gives those credentials real substance. She has been sailed from the United States to New Zealand, so her bluewater capability is a matter of demonstrated record rather than theory. The Yanmar 3GM30F, the factory-specification engine for this model, received a full rebuild in 2012. Construction throughout is solid fibreglass.
The listing is straightforward about her current situation. Medical issues have kept the owner away from the boat since 2020, and while antifouling and essential maintenance have been kept up through that period, Makaira will reward a new owner who has the time and inclination to bring her fully up to scratch. For a buyer with that patience, opportunities like this one rarely surface at this price. A Bristol Channel Cutter on the New Zealand market at $31,000 deserves a serious look regardless of condition.
